The 5-Minute Gutter Check Every Homeowner Should Do After a Storm

After a large storm, most homeowners look for obvious signs of damage around their homes; this often includes fallen branches, missing shingles, and leaks. These are all incredibly important and should not be overlooked, but there is another part of the home that many homeowners forget to consider: gutters.

In this blog, we will go over a quick and easy five minute gutter check that anybody can learn to do, no matter what level of experience they have.

1. Begin by walking around your home and looking at the gutters. Make sure that none are pulling away from the fascia or sagging. 
2. Check for overflowing water marks or debris packed that may have build up in the gutters. This can include leaves, twigs, and seed pods that can quickly create clogs, preventing water from flowing properly. When gutters overflow, water can damage siding, landscaping, and even the basement.
3. Look underneath the gutters as well. If you notice piles of shingle granules, this can be a sign that your roof is beginning to wear down. While this does not directly correlate to the gutters themselves, one of the most common places to find granules is within gutters.
4. Lastly, inspect your downspouts. Ensure that they are properly attached and directing water away from your home’s foundation. Standing water near the home can lead to moisture problems and even erosion over time.
