Any homeowner knows that houses make all kinds of noises. From soft pops to creaks to groans, these often become background noise. Eventually, many simply get used to these sounds and pay them no attention.

However, you may notice slight changes to these noises throughout the year. It might be startling to new homeowners when new sounds come up. So, what causes these changes?

One of the most common causes of noise changes throughout the years is temperature. As the weather shifts, the ways exterior materials interact with one another shift as well, expanding when it’s warm and contracting when temperatures drop. When materials shift, they can cause popping, clicking, creaking, and much more.

Strong gusts of wind can also put pressure on siding, gutters, and flashing. Components that are more loose may tap and rattle, letting you know you might need to get them looked at.

Rain water can sound like dripping and tapping, and the difference in intensity may cause varying sounds as well.

Now every unusual sound is a cause for concern. However, a new sound that happens repeatedly or grows louder over time is worth paying attention to. This is especially true if you notice any visible damage, water stains, damaged shingle, loose siding, and any other obvious issues.

Your home responds to its environment. Understanding how weather affects the materials around it can help you recognize changes and address potential problems before they become more significant.
