With the weather changing, this is the time of year where people are beginning to buy firewood and prepare their fireplaces. For this reason, we are extending our yearly reminder to have your fireplace inspected. The reason we continue to remind you about this year after year is because fireplace inspections are incredibly important to ensure your safety.
Many do not realize the dangers that fireplaces can pose if left unchecked. This is due to something called creosote. Creosote is the substance that can build up inside of your chimney. It is caused when the wood in your fireplace burns; the smoke contains creosote and as it travels up your chimney, it leaves the residue within it. As creosote accumulates, it can become a fire hazard. Creosote is extremely flammable, and eventually, as it continues to build up, a spark or intense heat can cause it to burst into flames. As you can imagine, this puts you at risk for fires.
So, how can you prevent this? The solution is quite simple really. All you need to do is call a professional to come and do a chimney sweep/ inspection. These do not cost much at all and they are rather quick, making them absolutely worth it in the long run. We always recommend that our clients reach out to a chimney sweep at least once a year. In addition, if you ever suspect there might be a problem with your chimney, or if something smells or seems off, it is important to reach out to a professional to make sure everything is in good shape. The safety of you and your family is the priority.
