The Most Common Roofing Material

Did you know that the most common material in America used for roofing is asphalt shingles?

What is it about asphalt shingles that make them so popular among Americans and roofing companies?

First of all, this material is great for all types of weather, making it sturdy year-round. A roof that can withstand any weather is preferable and takes off some of the stress of worrying whether or not your house will be okay after a storm or blizzard. The minerals that are added to the asphalt help to keep the shingles resistant to intense weather.

In addition, asphalt shingles are actually very well priced and affordable, making them a great choice to work with. They are cheaper than many other materials.

What are some downsides to asphalt shingles?

This material is a bit thinner than others. The base of asphalt shingles is typically organic paper, recycled paper, fiber from wood, etc. While this material is durable, it does wear out a little faster than other options due to how thin it is.

When were asphalt shingles first created?

Asphalt shingles were first invented in Michigan by Henry Renalds in 1901. They soon grew in popularity and were used more and more often because of how affordable and weather resistant they were.

What is the general timeframe that asphalt shingles last?

This material will last up to about twenty years. Despite the fact that some materials last longer, asphalt shingles are worth it to avoid damage from weather during their lifetime.

However, if there is existing damage that can be seen on the roof, it should immediately be tended to and fixed to avoid any further problems.

Why do we prefer these shingles even though they sometimes have a shorter lifespan?

Think of it this way:

Let’s say, for fun, that you are shopping for a new pair of shoes that you can wear daily. You could buy the super expensive shoes in the back that can only be worn on special occasions and need to be kept dry and clean so they don’t get ruined. Or, you could grab a pair up front that are comfortable and made for everyday use, including bad weather. If the shoes get wet, they dry!

Which shoes would you get?

The nice shoes might last longer, but they won’t be as durable. They might not match as many outfits or be as comfortable for everyday use. In some ways, they are just less practical.

The comfy shoes, however, can put up with more. They might run out faster as time goes on, but you didn’t spend as much on them and you get full use out of them. They are less likely to break or cause an issue than the fancy shoes.

For the same reason, we prefer asphalt shingles. However, we also know there are specific times that we need other materials.

Those fancy shoes will still come in handy for specific events. Different houses require different materials, and different events require different shoes.

We still like other materials for roofing, but we have our favorite one that we use the most commonly.

So what roof is best for you? Do you have to have a roof made out of asphalt shingles, or will other materials do well too?

Our advice is this:

It is all based on your preference and what you require to make your house the perfect one for you.

Do your research. Read all about different types of roofing materials and their pros and cons. While we have your preference for materials, we still work with others all the time. There are pros and cons to every option, and it really just depends on your preference.

So if you are looking to build a house or redo your roof, take the time to sit down and do your research. Talk to your roofer. Pick the very best option for you that makes you feel safe and secure.

When it comes down to it, what is most important is your happiness
