Your home’s roof is an important structure that helps keep your house safe. However, you may be unsure when it’s time to replace the roof. There are several signs that may indicate that your home is ready for a roof replacement.
1. Missing or Cracked Shingles
One of the best ways to determine if your roof needs to be replaced is to take a look at the roof’s shingles. Over time, shingles become more susceptible to damage, and more easily become cracked by hail or debris that falls on the roof. Additionally, an older roof is more likely to lose shingles during a storm with strong wind.
2. Leaks
Leaks are a common effect of a damaged roof. During storms with heavy rain, leaks become especially apparent. If left untreated, leaks in roofs can lead to major water damage to both the exterior and interior of your home. Though placing tarps on your roof is a temporary solution to keep water out of your home, the best way to protect your home long-term is to replace the roof.
3. Mold Growth in Ceilings or Drywall
Although missing or damaged shingles and leaks are more obvious signs that a roof should be replaced, mold growth may also indicate that your roof needs a replacement. Mold requires moisture to grow, and if water comes through your roof, mold is likely to grow as a result. Mold grows in drywall, which is sometimes difficult to detect unless there is a musty odor. It also grows on ceilings and in areas closest to the home’s roof.
