The Impact of Overgrown Plants on Your Deck: What You Need to Know

Did you know that plants can negatively impact your deck when they overgrow? That’s right; while greenery looks beautiful all over your deck and helps to create an outdoor oasis, if not properly managed, plants can actually cause significant damage to your deck. We understand the beauty and tranquility that vines may give when they wind through your trellis, but many do not know just how many problems these can cause. In this blog, we will look at the effects that plants can have on your deck and how to safely manage them.

1. Moisture Retention and Wood Rot— Overgrown plants can lead to moisture retention. When plants grow too close to, or on, the deck, their branches and leaves can trap water and other moisture, leading to wood rot. This can negatively impact the structural integrity of your deck over time. Ensuring that you trim back your plants to keep them from making direct contact with your deck will help to reduce moisture retention.

2. Invasive Roots— Did you know that some plants have invasive root systems? This means that they can spread and grow beneath your deck, causing structural damage. As they continue to grow, the deck can be lifted, cracking the boards and hurting the foundation. It is important to know what types of plants you choose to put near your deck to avoid invasive root systems.

3. Staining and Discoloration— Certain plants with flowers and/ or berries can fall onto the deck surface and cause discoloration, staining the material. This is especially problematic for lighter-colored decks. If you have these types of plants, make sure you are sweeping your deck and constantly cleaning it to prevent stains.

These are just some of the problems that plants can cause for your deck, but there are so many more. If you are concerned that your deck may have plant related damage— or any damage for that matter— give us a call today so we can offer a free inspection.
