Now that we are officially in the winter, it is time to be prepared for all the ways the cold, ice, and snow affect your home. In this blog, we will be focusing specifically on how the cold interacts with windows, and what you need to be aware of to keep your house warm and cozy.
When it is very cold outside, the wood around your windows can begin to contract. Similarly, when it is hot, wood expands.
When the wood around your window contracts, it can create a very tiny opening by the window that allows drafts in. This can make your home rather cold and can also cause you to waste money on heat while trying to keep your home warm.
So, besides replacing the windows, what are some ways to block these drafts?
- Window Snakes- These are also sometimes known as door snakes. These long, weighted pillow-like fabric snakes are placed in front of drafty areas to block the cold from coming in. This is one of the easiest ways to fix window drafts, but they are not a permanent fix.
- Removable Caulk- You can get removable caulk and simply seal any areas where drafts are coming in. When the spring comes around, you can peel the caulk back off.
- Thermal Curtains- Thermal curtains or drapes are specifically made to keep drafts out while keeping you warm. They are heavy and thick, making it possible to block cold air drifting in.
- Weather Strips- These strips are like very thick pieces of tape that are used to block out the cold. You can place these strips anywhere where drafts are leaking in from to keep the cold out.
Remember, the solutions above are temporary fixes, and if your windows become a bigger problem, it might be time to get them replaced.
